Rochester, MN (KROC-AM News) - The Olmsted County Attorney is seeking an aggravated sentence in the case of a Rochester man charged with driving drunk and causing a recent crash that took the life of an 18-year-old Rochester woman.

Court documents filed today included test results from a blood sample that put 36-year-old Sterling Haukom’s blood-alcohol-concentration at over .25, or more than three times the legal limit after the February 23rd crash that killed Erika Cruz. The court filing also indicates Haukom told investigators had consumed approximately 15 alcoholic drinks before the deadly crash and was driving fast because he was upset over an incident at a bar.

During the interview, investigators say Haukom described "smashing on the gas." Prosecutors say the so-called "black box" in his pickup showed the gas pedal was at 100 percent for about 14 seconds before the collision and calculated his speed at more than 60 miles per hour on a residential street with a 30 mile per hour speed limit.

Haukom today pleaded not guilty to criminal vehicular homicide and drunk driving charges and demanded a jury trial.

Her family said Erika Cruz was driving home from work when the vehicle driven by Haukom smashed into the driver's side of her car at the intersection of 12th Street and 8th Avenue Southeast. The recent Mayo High School graduate was rushed to St. Marys Hospital where she later died from her injuries.
