Winona, MN (KROC-AM News) - Recreational boaters are being told to expect some traffic jams on the Mississippi River in the Winona area next month.

The US Army Corps of Engineers has announced a project to replace the aging miter gates at Lock and Dam 5A near Fountain City Wisconsin.

The work will require closing the lock to all traffic between the hours of 7 AM and 7 PM on four different days in July. Those dates are July 19, 21, 26, and 28.

A news release concerning the project notes that after the lock reopens after each closure there is a priority list that will dictate the order of the line of vessels that will first pass through the lock. Government vessels will be at the front of the line followed by excursion boats and then commercial shipping. Recreational boaters will be at the back of the line.

US Army Corps of Engineers says the project is needed because the miter gates, which were originally installed in the 1930s, have become less serviceable due to damage and distress. The government agency says the new gates "will increase navigational longevity and operational readiness in support of the economically significant navigation infrastructure."
