The Rice County Sheriff's Office sent out a news release this afternoon that beginning at 5pm this evening a burning ban would be in place for all of Rice County.

The release from Sheriff Troy Dunn and the Minnesota DNR was short and to the point.

Due to high temperatures, extremely dry conditions and increased winds, the DNR and Sheriff’s Office will be instituting no open burning in Rice County on Thursday, June 17, 2021 at 5:00 pm until further notice.   We appreciate your cooperation.

According to the Minnesota DNR, a burning ban means that "burning permits will not be issued for brush or yard waste; no fireworks may be ignited on any public or private land outside city limits; and campfires are allowed only in an established fire ring associated with a home, campground, or resort."

Rice county joins a list of counties in North and Central Minnesota with burning bans in effect. Joining Rice County in the burning ban are: Southern and eastern portions of Beltrami county, and all of Cass, Crow Wing, Hubbard, Itasca, Morrison, Todd and Wadena counties. Those burning restrictions go into effect at 12:01 AM Friday morning according to a press release from the Minnesota DNR.
