Cold Enough to Take Your Breath Away
Rochester, MN (KROC AM News) - The Rochester area is in for some very cold weather during the final week of the year - and beyond.
Temperatures dropped below zero around 10:00 AM Monday and aren’t expected to get above zero until Wednesday afternoon. And then, temps will plunge into negative territory again Friday and may not get above zero until sometime Monday. Look for multiple nights with lows dropping into the minus teens. Lows around the region Tuesday morning were generally in the -5 to -15 degree range. The coldest reading was -17 at the Dodge County airport. Rochester’s unofficial low Tuesday morning was -13 at the airport while wind chill readings were around 30 below.
It was much colder in northeast Minnesota Tuesday morning where minus 20s were common. The coldest was -29 in Crane Lane and Bigfork. This comes one day after some residents in the region experienced a very cold Christmas Day. The National Weather Service says Hibbing’s high temp on Christmas Day was -11, the lowest high temperature ever recorded on Dec 25th. The high in International Falls was -13, the second coldest maximum temperature for Christmas Day.
Strong, biting winds have made the bitterly cold weather in Minnesota feel even colder with wind-chill readings of 20 to 50 below zero.
