St. Paul, MN (KROC-AM News) - Minnesota COVID-19 hospitalizations continue to slowly rise even though the number of new cases detected throughout the state remains relatively low.

The daily update from the State Health Department shows 340 people are currently hospitalized due to the new coronavirus infection. That is up slightly from yesterday and marked the fourth straight day the overall number of hospitalizations has slightly increased after several weeks of steady declines.

State health officials say around 9500 COVID-19 tests were completed yesterday and detected 304 new cases of the illness. That includes 24 new cases in Olmsted County and 15 new cases in Mower County. The grand total statewide is now above 33,700. The number of active cases in Olmsted County has been on the rise recently. Olmsted County Public Health today reported 137 active cases. That number has now more than doubled in the past couple of weeks.

Five new coronavirus deaths were reported Wednesday which pushed the total to just under 1400. Minnesota has now experienced four consecutive days during which the number of deaths attributed to the illness has been in the single digits.
