St. Paul, MN (KROC-AM News) - State officials have confirmed another case of chronic wasting disease in southeastern Minnesota.

The Minnesota Board of Animal Health says the fatal brain disorder was detected in a 2 1/2-year-old white-tailed doe on a farm in Houston County. Officials say the herd on the property has been quarantined and the owner of the animals is cooperating.

The state agency says there are 38 adults and 11 fawns in the herd. A plan is being developed to depopulate it and test the other animals for CWD. A request is also being made to the federal government to cover the owner's financial losses associated with the elimination of the herd.

The infected deer on the Houston County farm originally came from a herd in Winona County. Officials say that herd has also been quarantined.

A news release says three deer harvested by hunters within 10 miles of the Houston County farm tested positive for CWD. State officials are urging hunters to submit tissue samples from deer harvested in the upcoming hunting season to help develop a better understanding of how the disease is spreading.
