Minneapolis, MN (KROC-AM News) - Hennepin County court officials have scheduled a sentencing hearing for Derek Chauvin.

The Minnesota court system website indicates the former Minneapolis police officer is set to appear before Hennepin County Judge Peter Cahill at 1:30 in the afternoon on June 16th to receive his sentence for causing the death of George Floyd last May. Chauvin is expected to appear at least one additional hearing prior to the sentencing to determine if he should face an aggravated penalty.

Chauvin was found guilty of second and third-degree murder and second-degree manslaughter charges on Tuesday at the ending of the most closely watched criminal trial in Minnesota history. The jury that convicted him deliberated for about 10 hours over two days before handing down the guilty verdict. The testimony phase of the trial lasted 15 days.

While an appeal by Chauvin is expected, his attorneys have yet to file a notice with the court. He is currently being held in isolation at the Oak Park Heights Maximum Security State Prison.
