The Goodhue County Sheriff's Office has received positive identification of the individual found in a burned-out vehicle in front of a rural Kenyon home on New Year's Eve.

Corey Lee Cassidy, 36 of Dodge Center was positively identified yesterday afternoon by the Southern Minnesota Regional Medical Examiner's Office.

The Goodhue County Sheriff's Office news release states, "Our investigation indicates that accidental carbon monoxide asphyxiation may have been the result.  During this investigation, there has never been any indication of foul play."

The Goodhue County Sheriff's Office says, "The investigation indicates the fire started in the area of the vehicle and spread to the home but the cause of the fire is unknown."

I asked Chief Deputy Jeremy Lerfald if the vehicle was stolen because it had Wisconsin plates.  He said, "No."

I asked if an accelerant was used and he said there was no evidence of that however the Minnesota State Fire Marshal's Office and Goodhue County Sheriff's Office are continuing their investigation.

The initial call New Year's Even was the Kenyon Country Club was on fire.  The home of Jerry and Barb Peterson was fully involved when Kenyon firefighters assisted by Wanamingo firefighters responded to the 45000 block of Highway 56 Boulevard in Holden Township.

The Kenyon Police Department also responded according to the initial news release.

"Upon arrival firefighters located human remains in a burnt vehicle parked outside of the residence."

The Peterson's were in Arizona at the time and all family members were accounted for.

Lerfald did not indicate if there was any connection of the deceased to the Petersons.
