Dog and Cat Food Voluntarily Recalled in Minnesota After Deaths Reported
Heads up pet lovers! A recall has been announced by the Minnesota Department of Agriculture involving Sportmix cat and dog food products. The company, Midwestern Pet Foods, Inc. issued a voluntary recall of their product due to levels of Aflatoxin that is above the acceptable limit. Reports of illness and death of some dogs have been reported. These products were distributed nationally online and throughout stores.
Sportmix High Energy products included in the voluntary recall are:
- 50# Sportmix Energy Plus Lots Exp 03/02/22/05/L2, 03/02/22/05/L3, 03/03/22/05/L2
- 44# Sportmix Energy Plus Lots 03/02/22/05/L3
- 50# Sportmix Premium High Energy Lots 03/03/22/05/L3
- 44# Sportmix Premium High Energy Lots 03/03/22/05/L3
- 31# Sportmix Original Cat Lots 03/03/22/05/L3
- 15# Sportmix Original Cat Lots 03/03/22/05/L2, 03/03/22/05/L3
Sportmix pet food products included in voluntary recall
If you notice any signs of aflatoxin poisoning, please contact your vet immediately. According to the press release from the Minnesota Department of Agriculture, signs of aflatoxin poisoning: sluggishness, loss of appetite, vomiting, jaundice, and/or diarrhea.
Additional warnings were included in the voluntary recall that also indicates that pet parents should destroy the product so "children, pets and wildlife cannot access them." It was also recommended that all storage containers for pet food, bowls and/or cups also be washed and sanitized prior to further usage.
