The Fillmore Central Lady Falcons trip to state ended earlier than originally expected.

With concern to the coronavirus, Thursday was going to be the only day that any fan could make the trip up to the Twin Cities to catch a State Basketball game. The Falcons fans showed up and cheered, and the players left everything they had on the court. They just came up short.

The Lady Falcons drew the #3 seeded Henning Hornets in the Class A Quarterfinals, and Hornets were able to capitalize on some great outside shooting and offensive rebounding to secure the 69-56 win.

With the Minnesota State High School League canceling all consolation bracket play, it ended the Falcons season after just one game at the State Tournament.

It is always tough to finish the season in this manner, but the Falcons have no reason to hang their head. They were the first team to qualify for the basketball state tournament out of Fillmore Central, and they played hard all season long.

The Falcons were in a tight battle out of the gate with Henning, but the Hornets got some big shots down the stretch of the first half to take a 32-21 lead into the half.

The second half was much of the same, as Megan Weber connected on four 3's in the second half to help her finish with a team-high 29 points. The hot shooting for Henning continued, and Falcons just couldn't match.

Kassidy Broadwater was great for the Falcons, finishing with a game-high 30 points. She battled throughout the entire game on offense and defense and did everything she could to bring her team back.

Henning pushed the lead to 21 in the second half, but Broadwater and company cut the Henning lead down to nine, at 63-54 with just over a minute to go. Henning was able to hit their free throws down the stretch to secure the win.

Broadwater had 30, Kandace Sikkink added 11, while Emma Breitsprecher had five to lead the Falcons. Weber had 29 to pace Henning and Ellie Dague added 22.

The Falcons season may have ended earlier than expected, but it was a great season to follow. The Falcons have many reasons to be proud of what they accomplished.
