Rochester, MN (KROC AM News) - A famous rock and roll drummer who visited Rochester twice in recent years has died.

The Foo Fighters announced Friday night longtime drummer Taylor Hawkins had died.

He was 50-years-old. No other details were given. He was found in his hotel room in Bogota, Colombia where the Foo Fighters were scheduled to play.

Hawkins had been the band’s drummer for 25 years and was the best friend of frontman Dave Grohl, who stayed at his side for two weeks while he was in a coma after suffering a near-fatal heroin overdose in 2001.

Taylor was in Rochester in 2016 to help kickstart a program that designated Riverside Central Elementary School as a Turnaround Arts school.

According to the Rochester School District, the program “empowers high-need, low-performing schools with arts resources, art, music, theater and/or dance programs, musical instruments, arts integration across subject areas, and a Turnaround Artist mentor, as a strategy to turn around struggling schools.”

He returned two years later to see how the school was progressing.

The band is currently booked for a concert at US Bank Stadium in August.
