Governor Places Minneapolis and St. Paul Under Curfew
St. Paul, MN (KROC-AM News) - Governor Tim Walz has issued a curfew order for Minnesota's two largest cities.
The order, affecting Minneapolis and St. Paul, prohibits anyone from traveling on any public street or any public place between the hours of 8 PM and 6 AM Friday night and Saturday night. The order exempts law enforcement, fire, medical personnel, and members of the news media. It also exempts individuals who are traveling directly to and from work, seeking emergency care, fleeing dangerous circumstances, or experiencing homelessness.
The order was issued in response to the past two nights of widespread rioting and looting in the Twin Cities that included the torching of a police precinct headquarters and hundreds of other arson fires. Approximately 500 members of the Minnesota National Guard have been deployed throughout Minneapolis and St. Paul to maintain the peace and help prevent further lawlessness.
The rioting has followed what started as peaceful protests over the death of George Floyd, who died Monday night while being restrained by a Minneapolis police officer who pinned him to the ground by pressing a knee against his neck. The officer and three others were fired the next day and the Hennepin County Attorney today charged former officer Derek Chauvin with third-degree murder and second-degree manslaughter in connection with Floyd's death.
