Hastings Man Charged in Alleged Scheme to Silence China Critics
Brooklyn, NY (KROC-AM News) - A Hastings man is among the five people indicted by a federal grand jury in New York on charges involving an alleged scheme to silence critics of the Chinese government living in the United States.
According to a news release from the office of the US Attorney for the Eastern District of New York, 48-year-old Craig Miller is a 15-year Department of Homeland Security employee and is currently assigned as a Deportation Officer to the agencies Enforcement and Removal Operations in Minneapolis. A retired DHS Enforcement Agent now working as a private investigator in California is also named in the indictment.
Miller is charged with obstruction of justice. The indictment alleges he obtained and disseminated "sensitive and confidential information from a restricted federal law-enforcement database regarding US-based dissidents from the PRC" on behalf of the People's Republic of China. It is alleged the information was used by three other men accused of "a multifaceted campaign to silence, harass, discredit, and spy on US residents for exercising their freedom of speech."
The office of the US Attorney for Minnesota assisted with the investigation.
