Hit and Run Driver Sentenced for Killing Minneapolis Woman

Minneapolis, MN (KROC-AM News) - A 21-year-old Minneapolis man accused of killing a 70-year-old woman by driving through a red light has been sentenced to more than four years in prison.

The Hennepin County Attorney's Office says 22-year-old Cameron Bendson was given a 50 month prison term for his conviction on a criminal vehicular homicide charge. He had entered a guilty plea to the charge back in January.

The criminal complaint says Rosie Means was riding in a mobility scooter in the crosswalk at the North Minneapolis intersection the afternoon of October 11 when Bendson drove through a red light and struck her. Surveillance video reviewed by investigators showed her being thrown out of the scooter and all away across the intersection. Her death was blamed on blunt force injuries.

Bendson drove away from the scene of the fatal collision but was later identified as the owner of the vehicle involved. He was arrested the following day after his Jeep was found in the median along Highway 100 in Brooklyn Park. Officials say the interior of the Jeep had been set on fire.

A news release from the Hennepin County Attorney's Office also noted that an unrelated call to police the day before Means was killed reported that Bendson had been driving while under the influence of meth.
