There have been reports of Walmart's Mainstays brand of candle exploding and a class-action lawsuit has been filed against them saying the Mainstays candles are defective.

Some candles reportedly exploded without warning, or the candle can become nothing but flame (one report had the flame of the candle reaching a foot above the candle).

According to this story in Consider the Consumer

Numerous Mainstay candles consumers complained about their experiences in this defect. Some reports even resulted in property damage and injuries from the explosion. Thus, lawyers are searching for consumers who bought Mainstays candles countrywide, especially from high population states such as:

New York
New Jersey

They go on to say Walmart didn't disclose the defect, hasn't recalled the candles, and has "and has failed to reimburse plaintiff and other purchasers for the cost of purchasing the defective candles and/or the injuries and damages they suffered as a result of Walmart’s conduct...”

There are many people complaining on Facebook...for example,

The class action suit that's been filed is discussed here, on Top Class Actions.

According to Shelby, she had only burned her candle for about an hour when it suddenly started to produce flames that were high enough to damage the ceiling with soot. She claims that these flames did not appear to be coming solely from the wick, and were instead emerging from the pool of melted wax.

As she was afraid that the flaming candle might cause her house to catch fire, she pushed the candle into the sink, where it exploded. Shelby claims that the candle explosion sent fiery wax through the room, hitting her in the thigh. According to her, she suffered second degree burns on her thigh from the explosion.

The Walmart Mainstays Candle Dangerous Defect Class Action Lawsuit is Shelby Ellebracht v. Walmart Inc., Case No. 4:20-cv-00361, in the U.S. District Court for the Western District of Missouri.
