On December 6, 2022, Minnesota Driver and Vehicle Services (DVS) began a DVS Now vehicle registration kiosk program to give Minnesota drivers convenient, alternative locations to purchase their vehicle tabs.

Bring Me The News reports the first two kiosks were installed at the South St. Paul and Rochester Crossroad deputy registrar's office. Those kiosks would eventually be moved from those locations into Cub Foods stores in West St. Paul and Rochester.

Recently, the Minnesota DVS Now program announced it had expanded and as of Thursday, November 16, there were kiosks available inside 8 Cub Foods store locations.

They boast that the kiosks offer a fast and convenient alternative for completing vehicle registration renewals. Basically, customers scan the barcode on a renewal notice or provide the required information to update their registration.

Scanning and touchscreen technology are used to securely update registration information. Step-by-step instructions, along with optional voice assistance, are provided on-screen. After a successful renewal, your documents print instantly at the kiosk.

While some basic personal information will be required, you'll also need to know your insurance provider's name, policy number, and expiration date, the last 3 characters of the vehicle's VIN, and your license plate number. Also, make sure your address is correct on your renewal notice.

Once you're prepared, you can walk up to a kiosk and get your tabs in three steps:

  1. Enter your license plate number and the last 3 digits of your VIN.
  2. Pay your taxes and fees by credit or debit card.
  3. The kiosk will instantly print registration tabs and documents after you successfully complete your renewal.

Those taking advantage of the kiosks should note that aside from the total fees listed on the renewal notice, there is an additional $4.95 convenience fee for each vehicle renewed at the kiosk, as well as a 2.49% credit card processing fee. That credit card fee is what you'd pay to renew your tabs in person or online.

As of November 16, the following Minnesota Cub Foods Stores have DVS Now kiosks:

  • Apple Valley: 15350 Cedar Avenue
  • Maple Grove: 8150 Wedgewood Lane
  • Fridley: 250 57th Ave. NE
  • St. Paul: 1177 Clarence Street
  • Crystal: 5301 36th Ave. N.
  • St. Anthony: 3930 Silver Lake Road
  • West St. Paul: 2001 S. Robert Street
  • Rochester: 1021 15th Ave. SE

Hopefully, the program will continue to expand, providing more kiosks for Minnesotans throughout the state.
