We got a notice yesterday in the mail from Superior, Water, Light, and Power about lead pipe connections being serviced in the community. I always assumed we didn't have lead pipes because we've never heard anything about it before.

Lead Pipe Notice Sent Out To Superior Residents

The notice goes on to say that they will be replacing lead service connections in affected areas in the city and that affected customers were already notified in November via mail. I gotta be honest, I don't look at my Superior Water Light and Power bill religiously because I'm on budget pay and it's always the same amount. So, theoretically, I could have gotten the notice and never paid attention to it.

Map Of Service + Homeowner Water Line Material

I did some digging and found that there is an interactive map available on the Superior Water Light and Power website that shows both service line lead pipes and customer-owned lead pipes. There are also icons that indicate if it is unknown or galvanized.

You can search by your address or zoom in on the map. I was thankful that our pipes were non-lead, but I was surprised that just across the street, they had lead connections. I incorrectly assumed that neighborhoods would all be the same, but that's not the case.

Options For Reporting And Replacing

If your address has "unknown pipe materials," you can contact SWLP, and they'll send someone out to check. SWLP says they are evaluating financial assistance options and funding for homeowners to replace their lines. They are also asking for residents to sign a petition asking for government funding to help replace the lead pipes.
