Another Walmart In Minnesota Is Closing For Good
Walmart is America’s most popular retailer, bringing in over $550 billion in revenue in 2024. By comparison, Amazon comes in second with just over $270 billion. It’s not even close.
But despite Walmart’s dominance and those massive sales numbers, the company still closes stores from time to time. Over the last three years, about 30 stores have shut down nationwide, including one in Minnesota, with another one about to follow.

How Many Walmart Locations Are in Minnesota?
Minnesota is home to just over 60 Walmart Supercenters and 3 discount stores. The key difference is size and selection. The discount stores, Walmart’s original store format from the 1960s, carry clothing, electronics, home goods, toys, and seasonal items, but they don’t stock groceries.

Supercenters, introduced in the 1980s, are much larger and combine the merchandise of discount stores with a full-service grocery section. Many also offer a pharmacy, auto center, garden center, and vision services.
Another Minnesota Walmart Is Closing for Good
Walmart announced it will soon close one of its remaining discount stores in Minnesota. This follows the 2023 closure of a similar store in Brooklyn Center.
Starting August 29, the Walmart in Coon Rapids will shut its doors for good. In a statement to the Star Tribune, Walmart said, “This is an older format and doesn’t offer a full grocery department, which is something most customers want and what all our nearby Supercenters offer.”
The Coon Rapids location employs 180 people. Walmart says all employees will be able to transfer to nearby stores, and there are plenty to choose from. Six other Walmart Supercenters are located within 10 miles of the store.
