Why Starbucks Just Limited Orders at Minnesota Locations

These changes are part of a broader effort by Starbucks to improve service and speed, but not everyone will be thrilled about the tweaks. So what exactly is changing, and how might it impact your coffee routine in Minnesota? Here’s what you need to know.
Starbucks Limiting Mobile Orders and Customizations in Minnesota
Starbucks has previously stated that it plans to trim its menu by as much as 30% in 2025. Now, the coffee giant is also implementing new limits on mobile orders, including a cap on the number of items per order.
Going forward, customers will only be able to order 12 items per transaction instead of 15. Additionally, Starbucks, which has more than 180 locations across Minnesota, from the Twin Cities to Duluth down to Rochester, will no longer allow customers to add a splash of milk or lemonade to classic Refresher beverages.

The company says the menu already includes other drinks with similar modifications, so there’s no need to offer these changes as add-ons. For Minnesotans who rely on their go-to custom drink, this adjustment could mean rethinking their usual order.
Why Starbucks is Making These Changes
According to Bloomberg, Starbucks is implementing these restrictions to speed up service and reduce overwhelming mobile order volumes that have been putting stress on baristas. The company has faced declining sales in recent years, and executives believe streamlining orders could help improve efficiency and customer satisfaction.
Starbucks’ new CEO, Brian Niccol, recently stated, "It is clear we need to fundamentally change our strategy to win back customers." With competition in Minnesota’s coffee scene growing, from local spots to popular chains expanding in the state, Starbucks is looking to make adjustments to stay ahead.
