BLM Offering Wild Horses and Burros
Covering over 25 million acres in 10 western states, 175 Herd Management Areas are home to tens of thousands of wild horses and burros. According to the BLM, more than 47,000 of these animals are considered “excess,” meaning the land can no longer support their numbers without risking harm to both the animals and the environment.

Adoption Event in Cedarburg, Wisconsin
To help find new homes for around 30 wild horses and burros, the BLM is hosting an adoption event in Cedarburg, Wisconsin this fall. The event will take place at the Ozaukee County Fairgrounds on September 12 and 13.
It’s open to the public, though appointments are preferred. Interested adopters must also complete an application, which can be submitted ahead of time.
How to Qualify as an Adopter
To qualify, you must be at least 18 years old and have at least 400 square feet of corral space per animal, along with access to food, water, and shelter.
There are also specific fencing requirements for adult horses, yearlings, and burros. Animals must be transported in a stock-type trailer with solid walls and floors, a roof, and swing gates.
