With the 'opener' happening this weekend, chances are you already have secured your fishing license for Saturday. I didn't realize that you could opt for, and purchase, a lifetime fishing license. Here's what you need to know about the lifetime license.

According to the Minnesota Department of Natural Resources, "Lifetime licenses are available for certain hunting and fishing activities and must initially be applied for through the DNR License Center. With the fees being "based on the age of the licensee as of the date the application is received."

The fees are on a scale with licenses for younger people costing more than those over the age of 51 and younger than 3 years of age.

According to the DNR website, lifetime licenses can cost anywhere from $344 to $574.

If the sport you enjoy requires stamps you are still responsible for those, the DNR website says: "Lifetime license holders must purchase any stamps necessary to perform their license activity."

The idea of a lifetime license makes sense to someone who is out enjoying what Minnesota offers throughout all seasons of the year. For those who just like to get out and fish occasionally, you might be better off purchasing your licenses as you need them.

If you are heading out onto the lake this weekend to fish, remember to wear a life vest/jacket as the water still isn't very warm across the state, and being submerged in cold water can be fatal.
