Every town has its own reason to party. For example, in my hometown of International Falls along the Canadian border, we have Ice Box Days -- a January celebration of winter and cold and snow. But that's a story for another day.

In Remer, Minnesota, where there have been numerous sightings of Sasquatch for the last 125 years, they really celebrate the big shy guy. And in 2024, "Bigfoot Days" hits the ground running this July 5th and 6th.

WHY IS REMER "HOME OF BIGFOOT"?

Remer has a long and rich relationship with Sasquatch.

According to the "Home of Bigfoot" website, sightings of Biggie and his family in the Remer area can be traced back to the late 1800s. It became common that someone saw something in the brush that wasn't a bear. Or they found a set of large, deep footprints near the swamp. Townspeople even left gifts of food for the creatures. Imagine that -- humans and Sasquatch co-existing in the Remer area as neighbors.

As the dense forests in the area were logged and cleared in the early 20th century, Bigfoot seemed to move to more densely-forested areas. Even so, the sightings continued around Remer, although as the website notes, "but not in the usual areas, and not as often."

THIS YEAR'S FESTIVAL

The two day "Bigfoot Days" happens this year with a few events on Friday, July 5th and most of the other stuff on Saturday, July 6th.

On Friday, you can meet Bigfoot investigators and hear storytelling about Biggie. There's also "Bigfoot Olympics" and karaoke.

On Saturday, there's an all day flea market on the west end of town. A 5K run, pancake breakfast, Bloody Mary bar, kids game, scavenger hunts for both the kids and adults, 3-on-3 basketball, bean bag tournament, bbq contest and live music.

But it's the Bigfoot Calling Contest and the storytelling sessions with Bigfoot research teams that I'm most interested in.

I don't care if you believe in the possibility of Sasquatch or not. Whatever made the sounds in the YouTube video below is scary. And they're going to recreate some of these calls and hollers and screams at Bigfoot Days in July. It's going to be a hoot!
