Aggravated Sentence Requested For MN Woman Who Crashed Into Crowd
Minneapolis, MN (KROC-AM News) - The Hennepin County Attorney's Office has given notice of its intent to seek an aggravated sentence in the case of the woman accused of killing a teenager by driving an SUV into a crowd of people in downtown Minneapolis last month.
The official notice was filed this morning during a court appearance for 22-year-old Latalia Anjolie Margalli. The Minneapolis woman was arrested in the early morning hours of September 14 after an SUV sped into a group of people following an altercation outside a business near the corner of Hennepin Avenue and 5th Street, which is only a few blocks from Target Field and Target Center.
The criminal complaint in the case alleges that Margalli and some of her friends were involved in a verbal altercation with the teenage victim and her friends that escalated into a physical fight. It's alleged that, at some point during the altercation, Margalli got into her vehicle and accelerated directly toward the 16-year-old girl, who was on the ground and fighting with another person.
The charges allege the vehicle struck numerous people, including the juvenile girl, who suffered fatal injuries. One of the numerous witnesses cited in the court document told police that he saw the vehicle strike the crowd and that Margalli "didn't hit her brakes or nothing."
Minneapolis police reported that a witness followed Margalli when she fled from the scene and that she was later stopped and apprehended about a mile away from the crime scene in a residential neighborhood of North Minneapolis.
Margalli is charged with second-degree murder and five counts of second-degree assault with a dangerous weapon. She remains jailed with her bail set at $1.5 million.
