Winona, MN (KROC-AM News) - A Winona County judge has named the location for the upcoming trial of the man charged with murdering Madeline Kingsbury.

30-year-old Adam Fravel faces two counts each of first and second-degree murder for allegedly killing the 27-year-old Winona woman and leaving her body along a gravel road in Fillmore County last year. The case attracted international media attention after Maddi Kingsbury was reported missing on March 31, 2023 after she failed to report for her job in Rochester at Mayo Clinic.

She was last seen alive with Fravel as they dropped off their children at day care that morning. After her disappearance, Fravel told investigators the couple had returned to their home in Winona and that he left later in the morning to take care of some errands and found Kingsbury gone when he returned in the afternoon.

According to the charges, Fravel later told investigators that his relationship with Maddi was coming to an end and they were preparing to move out of their Winona residence. The court document also says that he indicated Kingsbury had told him that she had started seeing someone else about two weeks before she vanished and that she was looking for an apartment for herself and her children.

Fravel was arrested following the discovery of Kingsbury's body in some brush not too far from a gravel road just north of Mabel. The criminal indictment notes the location is near the home of Fravel's parents, which is where he was taken into custody.

Court records described a stormy relationship between Fravel and Kingsbury that allegedly included a history of physical abuse. The two met while attending Winona State University and investigators say they had an on-again off-again relationship that resulted in two young children.

The judge presiding over the case earlier granted a defense motion for a change of venue due to the extent of publicity surrounding the case in the Winona area, but did not specify where the trial would be held. In order issued today, the judge directed that the trial be held at the Blue Earth County Justice Center in Mankato.
