Rochester, MN (KROC-AM News) - A man who was recently released from prison after serving sentences for assaulting an Olmsted County Detention Deputy and a state prison correctional officer was arrested yesterday for an assault on a well-known Rochester community activist and volunteer.

44-year-old Malik Amin Johnson was arraigned in Olmsted County Court this morning on a second-degree assault charge and a misdemeanor count of fifth-degree assault. His bail was set at $500,000.

According to the criminal complaint, Johnson was arrested after Rochester Police Officers responded to a halfway house located on the Olmsted County Campus to investigate a report of an assault. The officers arrived and found a man "bleeding from the head, moaning, and making indiscernible sounds as if he was trying to form words."

Social media posts have identified the victim as Charles Jackson, the man behind the Yammy Bear mascot that has appeared at numerous Rochester area community events in recent years. The criminal complaint says he was not able to provide a statement to investigators because of the seriousness of his injuries, but information about his current medical condition is not available.

The charges say Johnson was located in a secure room in the building with a metal tire pump. The court document says witnesses reported the victim was sitting on a couch when the man allegedly struck him on the head with the tire pump.

Johnson was the subject of a recent Rochester Police Department Community Notification because of his release from prison and his status as a Level 3 predatory sexual offender. Court records indicate he was convicted of a felony criminal sexual conduct charge involving a mentally impaired and helpless victim in 2016.

Those records also show that he was convicted of a felony charge for an assault on a detention deputy in the Olmsted County Jail in 2017 and was later convicted of assaulting a correctional officer while he was incarcerated at the Oak Park Heights State Prison.
