Man Shot By St. Paul Police Suspected of Shooting Four People
Minneapolis, MN (KROC-AM News) - Minneapolis police have confirmed that a man shot by St. Paul police officers Monday night is suspected of two shootings in Minneapolis, including the shooting on Sunday at a homeless encampment that killed two men and critically wounded a woman.
A statement issued by Minneapolis Police Chief Brian O'Hara Tuesday afternoon indicates the man, who has been identified by the Minnesota Bureau of Criminal Apprehension as 40-year-old Earl Bennett, is suspected of the shooting at the homeless encampment and another shooting in Minneapolis on Monday that left a man with a "potentially-life-threatening gunshot wound."
St. Paul police earlier reported that Bennett was shot and critically wounded by officers during a confrontation that began around 7:45 PM on Monday after officers responded to reports of a shooting and a person with a gun. The preliminary investigation indicates the officers encountered a man holding a gun to his own head.
St. Paul police officials say the officers tried to negotiate with a man, but then opened fire when he pointed the gun at the officers. He was last reported to be in critical, but stable condition at Regions Hospital.
The Minnesota Bureau of Criminal Apprehension is in charge of the investigation into the officer-involved shooting.
