Mayo Clinic’s New Supercomputer Aims to Advance AI in Healthcare
Rochester, MN (KROC-AM News) - Mayo Clinic has announced the acquisition of a new supercomputer to advance its artificial intelligence initiatives as part of the Bold. Forward. Unbound. strategy.
A news release described it as "a pivotal step toward integrating AI solutions in the clinical setting." Mayo says the deployment of the NVIDIA DGX SuperPOD will enable the healthcare institution to accelerate pathology slide analysis and foundation model development to ultimately improve patient outcomes.
"Our aspiration for AI is to meaningfully improve patient outcomes by detecting disease early enough to intervene. What was once a hypothetical - 'If only we had the right data' - is now becoming reality thanks to AI and advanced computing," said Matthew Callstrom, M.D., Ph.D., medical director of the Department of Strategy and leader of Mayo Clinic’s Generative Artificial Intelligence Program.
According to the news release, Mayo Clinic has partnered with Aignostics to train an AI on more than 1.2 million histopathology whole slide images. By deploying the new supercomputer, Mayo says it will accelerate and improve clinical model development by coupling the computing power with Mayo Clinic's "unparalleled clinical expertise and a platform containing data from over 20 million digitized pathology slides."
