According to court documents, the Willmar area man contacted the victim using a messaging app and identified himself as a 19-year-old man named "Tyler." The charges say Groen knew the victim was underage and coerced the individual to send him the sexually explicit images. It was also alleged that he sent the victim scene images and links to pornography, while also encouraging the victim to have sex with an adult man.

The investigation that led to the guilty plea was conducted by the Willmar Police Department and the FBI.
