St. Paul, MN (KROC-AM News) - A Minnesota man has been sentenced to a year in federal prison for making threats against the US Senator.

The US Attorney for Minnesota says 35-year-old Brendon Daugherty earlier entered a guilty plea to a charge of interstate transmission of a threat to injure the person of another. During his sentencing hearing at the federal courthouse in St. Paul, the judge in the case stated that threats directed at elected officials pose a "pernicious threat to our democratic institutions."

According to court documents, the Coon Rapids man left two voicemail messages on the phone for the field office of an unnamed US Senator outside of Minnesota. Federal prosecutors say both messages contained threats of violence directed at the Senator.

In his first message, Daugherty is heard saying, "You and the Republican Party should be proud that you're pushing me to become a domestic terrorist. Have a nice (expletive) day; can't wait to kill ya." In his second message, Daugherty stated, "I also just wanted to note, thank God the Republican Party is against gun control laws because it would keep guns out of the hands of a person that was disabled and volatile like I am, but you guys are totally against that. So, I may actually get to carry out my nefarious goals."

The staff at the Senator's field office was able to retrieve the recorded messages and reported them to the US Capitol Police.
