Winona, MN (KROC-AM News)- A suspect is in custody following a broad-daylight shooting in Winona on Thursday.

That’s according to a Facebook post published by the Winona Police Department. Officers responded to multiple reports of gunfire shortly after 9 a.m.

Gunman in Custody After Shooting in Winona Thursday Morning

The shooting was reported in the 350 block of East 5th St. Responding officers found a pair of spent shell casings in the road, police say. 

No injuries were reported. Multiple witnesses provided a description of the suspect, authorities say. 

Officers then found the suspected shooter at a residence near the scene of the gunfire and took him into custody. He was also in possession of a handgun at the time of his arrest, police say. 

Winona Police identified the suspect as 40-year-old Jonathan Marquist Payton. The criminal complaint alleges he fired in the direction of a woman walking in the area.

He was booked into the Winona County Jail shortly before 10:30 Thursday morning. He is charged with intentional discharge of a firearm, reckless discharge of a firearm and possession of a firearm by a person convicted of a violent crime, according to jail records. 

Court records indicate Payton has a criminal history that dates back to 2017 and includes convictions of first-degree burglary, felony fleeing and felony stalking.

Payton made his first court appearance on Friday morning. His conditional bail was set at $80,000 and he is due back in court later this month.
