Winter Weather Advisory For Rochester-Storm Warning to the South
Rochester, MN (KROC-AM News) - The National Weather Service has dropped the winter storm watch that was issued earlier for the Rochester area and has replaced it with a winter weather advisory.
The advisory covers most of the southeastern corner of Minnesota, other than Fillmore and Houston counties, which are included in the winter storm warning that has been posted for much of Iowa and southern Wisconsin. The winter weather advisory and storm warning will be in effect from midnight tonight through 6 AM on Wednesday.
The most recent snowfall forecast from the National Weather Service has Rochester right on a line that separates an area running diagonally across the region where 3-5 inches of snow is expected from another area where the forecast calls for 4-8 inches of accumulation.
Heavier snow is predicted to fall across southern Winona County and nearly all of Fillmore and Houston counties. The National Weather Service is predicting up to 8 inches of accumulation in parts of Fillmore and Winona counties and between 8-12 inches of accumulation in southern Houston County.
The brunt of the storm system, which has been described by forecasters as "impactful and hazardous," is predicted to hit areas of eastern Iowa and southwest Wisconsin. The snowfall totals in those areas are forecast to range from around 10 inches to well over a foot.
As of late Monday afternoon, travel conditions were already rapidly deteriorating in northeastern Iowa. Forecasters say slippery conditions will likely develop in the Rochester area after 9 PM and continue through the night and the day on Tuesday with the winds expected to be from the northwest with gusts over 30 mph.
The powerful low-pressure system responsible for the winter storm will pull much colder air into the region by the end of the week. The morning low on Saturday could be in the single digits and the high temperature that afternoon could struggle to reach 15°.
