When you hear/read the word "safest" used to describe a hospital, what do you think of?

When it comes to the latest study by the LeapFrog Group (an independent nonprofit focused on patient safety), called "Spring 2025 Hospital Safety Grades," it means the hospital's ability to protect their patients from often preventable harm, or more specifically, their ability to protect patients from medical errors, accidents, injuries and infections.

The LeapFrog group releases the results of studies twice per year, after evaluating almost 3,000 hospitals across the country using over 20 different measures of patient safety. As an Illinois resident, you'll be happy to know that over 30 Illinois hospitals got a grade of A.

Illinois Makes A Good Showing On The Spring List, Moving Up From Number 30 In The Country To Number 20 Overall

The states with the highest percentage of A grades from this study are Utah, Rhode Island, New Jersey, Connecticut, South Carolina and Virginia.

Illinois may have over 30 hospitals that garnered an A grade, but we do have some hospitals in the state that came in below that. 18 Illinois hotels earned B grades, and 40 earned C grades. 15 hospitals in Illinois received D grades, and one received an F.

Here's how LeapFrog graded Rockford's hospitals, according to MyStateline.com:

In Rockford, OSF Saint Anthony Hospital earned the highest grade in the city, a “B.” UW Health SwedishAmerican Hospital received a “C” rating. Javon Bea Mercyhealth – Rockton received a “D." Javon Bea Mercyhealth – Riverside was not listed.
