Residents across the Quad Cities may see strong to severe storms move through the area later today, with the greatest risk expected during the late afternoon and evening hours.

Severe Storms Could Impact Quad Cities This Afternoon and Evening

Forecasters say warm temperatures climbing into the 80s, combined with humid air and leftover boundaries from overnight storms, are creating the perfect setup for storms to develop quickly. Once they form, some could become severe in a short amount of time.

What The Storms Could Bring

Early storms this afternoon may bring large hail, possibly reaching up to 2 to 3 inches in diameter. There is also a small chance for a few tornadoes, though that risk is expected to remain isolated. Heavy rain and frequent lightning are also likely with stronger storms.

As the evening goes on, storms are expected to come together into a larger system. When that happens, the main concern will shift to strong, damaging winds that could knock down tree limbs and cause power outages in some areas.

The highest risk for severe weather is expected in areas along and north of Highway 30, though exactly where the strongest storms hit will depend on how conditions develop throughout the day.

Storms may continue into the overnight hours, but they are expected to gradually weaken. Even so, some gusty winds and hail could still occur overnight.

Storms Coming In On Wednesday

Looking ahead, there is a chance for additional storms on Wednesday, depending on how much the atmosphere recovers after today’s system moves through.

Meteorologists say days like today are a good reminder to stay weather-aware. While not everyone will see severe conditions, the weather could change quickly. Residents are encouraged to keep an eye on forecasts and be ready to take shelter if warnings are issued.
