Preliminary information released by the Cass County Sheriff’s Office says the incident unfolded on Sunday afternoon. 

The gunfire exchange happened during a foot pursuit. The Minnesota Bureau of Criminal Apprehension was requested to the scene following the gunfire.

Suspect Killed, Cass County Sheriff's Deputy Wounded After Shooting Near Leech Lake

Deputies responded to a 911 call reporting a shooting shortly after 4:30 Sunday afternoon in Turtle Lake Township, which is near the southwestern shore of Leech Lake. 

Shortly after arriving at the scene, deputies found the suspect walking near the scene of the shooting in the 8000 block of Onigum Road NW. 

The Cass County Sheriff’s Office says the suspect fled on foot and deputies chased him on foot. 

An exchange of gunfire occurred during the foot pursuit resulting in the deputy being shot and the suspect being killed, authorities say. 

The deputy was flown to a hospital in Fargo. An update on the law officer’s condition is not available as of Monday morning.

The names of the deputy and suspect have not been released. The BCA is leading the investigation into the shooting.
