Why is the Xcel Energy Center Changing Its Name?

The Xcel Energy Center is the home of the Minnesota Wild. It opened back in September of 2000, and it has been the Xcel Energy Center since its opening.

After 25 years, Xcel Energy won't be renewing their title sponsorship slot, and that means a new name for the X.

In June of 2024, Charley Walters with the Twin Cities Pioneer Press wrote in his Sunday sports column:

"One company is said to already have made an offer to the Wild ... and a handful of other firms are seriously interested."

The name wasn't going to be changed until the end of the Wild's 2024-2025 season, which ended back in April.

But now, a deal has been made, and we have a new name for the Xcel Energy Center.

New Name for the Xcel Energy Center

The Wild announced this morning that a deal has officially been made with a new title sponsor. They will be the title sponsor for 14 years.

Starting September 3rd, 2025, the Xcel Energy Center will become Grand Casino Arena.

Minnesota Sports & Entertainment (who operates The X) struck a deal with Grand Casino Mille Lacs and Grand Casino Hinckley.

Thoughts on the new name? It doesn't sound bad! Grand Casino Arena has a nice ring to it. But it's going to take a LONG time to get used to. I'm going to keep calling it The X for a while, that's for sure.

Maybe it'll be like when Twitter changed to X and everyone refers to it as X (formerly known as Twitter). Maybe that's what we'll have to say: Grand Casino Arena (formerly known as The X).
