He's a Minnesota native who's opened several popular restaurants, and how he's just won his first national Emmy award.

Big shout-out to Minnesota chef Justin Sutherland. You might have been to one of his award-winning restaurants in the Twin Cities, like Handsome Hog in St. Paul. Or maybe you've tried his Northern Soul-inspired food (which is also the name of his new cookbook) at the recently-opened location at the Minneapolis-St. Paul International Airport, Uptown Ties Rooftop & Lounge Minneapolis or at The Preserve at Grand View Lodge up north in Nisswa. He also owns a breakfast restaurant called Big E's, located on Grand Avenue in St. Paul.

Or perhaps you've seen Justin on TV. He competed on season 16 of Bravo's 'Top Chef,' and was also a winner on the show 'Iron Chef America' on the Food Network. He's also made appearances as a judge on the show 'Chopped,' and co-hosted the show 'Fast-Foodies' on Tru-TV.

But earlier this month, he added a TV award to his mantel, when he won a national Daytime Emmy Award for Outstanding Culinary Host for his latest show, 'Taste the Culture,' which also airs on Tru-TV. Its first season is available on YouTube, and features Justin traveling the country 'on the hunt for BIPOC stories in the culinary world,' according to the production company that produced the show.

And Justin had some steep competition, too, winning the coveted Emmy statue from other well-known TV food personalities, like the Food Network's Ina Garten and Guy Fieri, plus Emeril Lagasse and another Minnesotan, Andrew Zimmern, who were also nominated in his category.

So, yeah, it's a pretty big deal. Congrats, Justin! You can check out an episode of his award-winning show below. And keep scrolling to check out some other famous stars who got their start in the Land of 10,000 Lakes as well!
