Rochester’s Skyline Is Changing Fast with New Construction Everywhere
Construction projects are all OVER Minnesota's third-largest city (and largest outside of the Twin Cities metro) these days, as work starts in earnest on Mayo Clinic's $5 billion Bold Forward Unbound expansion. With that development, the downtown skyline continues to change. So just which buildings are the tallest here in Rochester right now?
It was several years ago that Mayo Clinic made an announcement that said they were planning on adding 11 new stories to the top of the Gonda Building, with the top seven floors being a luxury hotel.
How Tall Is Rochester’s Gonda Building Compared to the Rest?
Of course, the pandemic put the kibosh on those plans, at least for now, anyway. However, as it currently stands, the Gonda Building is already pretty tall, coming in at 21 floors. That now-not-going-to-happen expansion would've topped it out at 32 floors, which definitely would have made it the tallest building in Rochester.
So just what are the other buildings that make up the tallest in our ever-expanding skyline? Well, this Post Bulletin story said the Gonda Building is on the list, but right now, it's actually the second-tallest building in Rochester.
The Tallest Buildings in Rochester, Ranked
The tallest is the Broadway Plaza building, then the Gonda, followed by the historic Plummer Building (which, according to Mayo Clinic, is a full 15 floors), then the Mayo Building, and finally the Hilton Rochester Mayo Clinic, next to the Broadway Plaza. (Remember when it was named the Best Hotel in North America a few years ago?)

So do Rochester's tallest buildings compare to buildings in Minneapolis and St. Paul? While Med City's skyline is impressive for a city its size, the Twin Cities still have us beat. Wells Fargo Place is the tallest building overall in St. Paul, while Cray Plaza has the most floors, coming in at 46.
The IDS Center in Minneapolis, however, has 57 floors and stands 792 feet high, which makes it not only the tallest in Minneapolis but the tallest building in the entire state of Minnesota as well.
