This Popular Gum Will Soon Be Gone For Good in Minnesota

It's been around for over half a century but this familiar gum will soon be going away for good here in Minnesota and around the country.

Sometimes it seems the only constant in life these days is change. And things are certainly changing for this once-popular chewing gum, which is soon to be discontinued here in the Land of 10,000 Lakes and across the country.

Although, if you're like me, you might be surprised that this brand of chewing gum hasn't already been discontinued. This isn't a good sign, I'm guessing, and it might be partly responsible for this brand going away.

On the other hand, I was today's days old when I found out that Dentyne gum hasn't been around here in the Bold North, or anywhere else in North America, since 2019. Who knew?

So which gum are we talking about now? Well, this story from Food & Wine magazine says that the makers of Fruit Stripe Gum are pulling the plug on that familiar brand, and will stop selling it later this year.

"We have made the difficult decision to sunset Fruit Stripe Gum," Foot & Wine noted a Ferrara Candy representative said in a statement. "The decision to sunset this product was not taken lightly, and we considered many factors before coming to this decision, including consumer preferences, and purchasing patterns," the Food & Wine story said.

Like I said earlier, I wasn't sure Fruit Stripe Gum hadn't ALREADY been discontinued. It had a long run, though. This USA Today story says the once-popular gum was first introduced in the late 60s and had gone through various ownership changes over the years before being acquired by current owners, the Ferrara Candy Company.

USA Today says the brand, which was available in five flavors (Wet n’ Wild Melon, Cherry, Lemon, Orange, and Peach) was mainly identified by its multi-colored zebra mascot called Yipes. And each package of gum came with a temporary tattoo of Yipes too, which I somewhat vaguely recall. You'll still be able to find it at 'select retailers' until it sells out.
