MN Walmart Return Rules: Items That Now Require A Receipt
Have you misplaced your receipt and are hoping one of Minnesota's Walmart stores will still take it back? Before you head to the customer service desk, here are the items that’ll stop your return in its tracks without that coveted proof of purchase.
How Many Walmart Stores Are There in Minnesota?
When it comes to discount department stores, while Minnesotans might have a fondness for Target, a massive retail chain, Walmart is also no slouch here in the North Star State and is one of the biggest retailers in the country. Walmart says it currently operates around 4,611 retail locations across 52 states and territories.
You'll find 64 of those locations here in the Land of 10,000 Lakes. There used to be 65 Minnesota Walmarts, but the retail giant announced last summer that it was permanently closing its Coon Rapids location at the end of August, 2025.

According to its official store directory, you can still find Walmart stores all across Minnesota. The chain currently operates two retail centers in both Blaine and Rochester, and single stores in 62 other Minnesota cities.
Why Walmart Requires a Receipt for Certain Returns
And while you'll find many different Walmart locations all across the North Star State, there are now 17 different items you won't be able to return-- unless you have a receipt. Why is that? It's to prevent return fraud, which has cost the company millions of dollars each year.

The most common version of return fraud is when someone takes an item they didn’t actually buy and then tries to return it, without a receipt, for cash or store credit. Another variation is receipt recycling, where a person buys an item, returns it, then goes back and tries to return the same item again at a different store without proof.
There’s also a return fraud scam referred to as price arbitrage, where someone buys an item on clearance or at another retailer and attempts to return it to Walmart for a higher refund.
