With the Chicago Cubs' latest disgraceful loss, you can officially put their chances of winning a World Series in 2026 to rest.
When you consider the Cubs won ten games in a row, not once but twice, you’d think this early in the season, and yes, it’s still early, they’d cruise to a divisional title and then be in serious contention to win it all.

Can a Team Win the World Series After a 10-Game Losing Streak?
Now we’re starting to wonder if they’ll ever win again. Making it ten losses in a row last night, if the Chicago Cubs are going to win the whole thing in 2026, they’ll be the first in Major League Baseball history to have done so with a ten-game losing streak on their resume.
The team that came closest to the Cubs current standard of failure is the New York Yankees in 1953, who lost nine consecutive games but eventually won the World Series.
That was then; this is now, and only four teams in league history who lost 10 straight during the regular season made a postseason run.
The 1951 New York Giants lost 11 straight, but somehow made the World Series and lost anyway.
Last year’s 2025 Cleveland Guardians lost 10 straight but made the playoffs, and the same thing goes for the 1982 Atlanta Braves.

Ghost of 1969: How the Cubs' Current Slide Mimics Past Heartbreak
There’s another team that’s on the list, the 1969 Chicago Cubs. They lost 10 straight, but they made the playoffs, only to get beaten by the New York Mets. Of all the great misses by Cubs teams over the years, namely, the 1984 and 2003 squads, the 1969 team collapse is an all-time tough one for diehard fans.
While it’s gloom and doom right now for the North Siders, take solace in the fact that in 2017, the Los Angeles Dodgers experienced the same thing: they lost 10 straight and won 10 straight. That Dodgers team finished 104-58 and made a run to the World Series.
