According to the Impulse Traveler survey which listed the ugliest American cities in the U.S., nearly half of the list are midwestern cities.
CLEVELAND, OHIO
Cleveland has made efforts to bring life back to its waterfront and downtown area, some Reddit users feel it still "has a long way to go before it can be considered a beautiful city."
DETROIT, MICHIGAN
Motor City hasn't had the best reputation over the past couple of decades, but now the renaissance is in full swing. But, perception is still the reality.
The city's history of industrial decline, poverty, and crime has left it scarred, though the city has been making efforts to revitalize its downtown area and attract new investment.
Baltimore, Maryland, Buffalo, New York, and Newark, New Jersey also made the ugliest 8 cities in America. The ugliest city out west was San Francisco, and Vali, Arizona is one ugly desert.
But, there's still one more town from the Midwest ranked on this 'ugly' list.
It's Not in Illinois, But This City is Pretty Close
According to The Impulse Traveler, one of America's ugliest cities is Gary, Indiana.
One traveler said that while visiting Gary, he walked through town and described it as "the most tense and depressing walk I'd ever taken."
