A 37-Year-Old High School Football Rivalry Returns to Illinois This Friday

Some local-football history is coming back to life this Friday night in the Stateline area, and as a current Pecatonica resident, I have some major skin in the game.

Over the last few weeks, I've seen this post shared in several Pecatonica community social media groups, and I knew I had to find out what this "Silver Bucket Showdown" is all about.

What Is the Silver Bucket Showdown?

Let's start with the basic facts: The Silver Bucket is a traveling trophy for the football rivalry between Winnebago and Pecatonica.

My mother-in-law, a lifelong Pecatonica resident, told me that before the Silver Bucket Showdown was introduced in 1961, players and fans from both schools used to find other, more creative ways to signify the rivalry. I'm talking about things like painting people's garage doors and public property in the opposing team's colors, so the Silver Bucket was introduced to cut down on some of the shenanigans.

From 1961 to 1989, Winnebago and Pecatonica played 28 games, in which Winnebago won 18 and Pecatonica won ten. The scores and winners of each game are engraved on the bucket, and for 37 LONG years, the Silver Bucket has lived in Winnebago's trophy case.

Basically, the Silver Bucket Showdown is exactly the kind of high school football rivalry small towns are supposed to have, and this Friday it's officially coming back in a big way.

A Rivalry Reborn

In 1990, Winnebago and Pecatonica began to play as a co-op football team, so now generations of Pec and Bago families have connections on both sides.

My husband was a freshman on the Pecatonica football team 37 years ago when Pecatonica last lost the Silver Bucket, and as a current DuPec football fan, he is incredibly excited to see the Showdown return.

Friday night isn't just another football game.

Technically, the game is Winnebago vs. DuPec, but in the hearts of many long-term residents, it's Pecatonica vs. Bago, aka, revenge time.

The game will be played at the Winnebago Football Stadium, with pre-game activities including a football toss challenge with a cash prize, face painting, and Silver Bucket Showdown merchandise beginning at 5:30 p.m. The game will kick off at 7 p.m.

After 37 years, I have a feeling the Silver Bucket will finally be returning home to DuPec country this Friday night. GO RIVERMEN!

(And just for the record, my husband is predicting the score will be: DuPec 42, Winnebago 27)
