Ladies, This Women’s Self-Defense Class in Davenport Is Completely FREE
If you’ve ever wanted to learn self-defense but felt intimidated walking into a martial arts gym, a Davenport class is hoping to change that.
The Women’s Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu & Self-Defense Class is designed specifically to give women a comfortable place to learn practical skills, get some exercise and have fun with other women.
The classes are held two Sundays each month at 10:30 a.m. at Tarpein’s, 235 W. 35th St. in Davenport. The classes are completely free, but women are asked to sign up ahead of time so organizers know how many people to expect.
You Don’t Have to Be Tough to Try It
One of the biggest messages from coaches Rachel Sundar and Anna is that you choose how much you participate.
If you’re nervous, curious, or just want to come watch and see what it’s all about, that’s completely okay.
The classes focus on learning skills that can give women more options, confidence, and safety in difficult situations. Participants will learn techniques involving takedowns, throws, standing sweeps, chokes, joint locks, and other self-defense skills.
There are also plenty of opportunities to practice without going full-force. When someone taps, the technique stops.
And don't worry, this isn't a place for people to beat each other up. The goal is to learn, have fun, and build skills.

Two Coaches With Serious Martial Arts Experience
Rachel and Anna bring about 15 years of combined martial arts experience to the class.
Anna is a Judo black belt who has competed around the world and also has experience coaching women's wrestling.
Rachel is a purple belt in Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu and incorporates some kickboxing into her self-defense training. One of the things she loves about BJJ is that it doesn't depend entirely on size or strength.
A smaller person can use the right technique to defend themselves against someone who is bigger or stronger.

A Comfortable Space for Women
Rachel and Anna understand that walking into a martial arts class filled with men can be intimidating, especially for someone who is completely new.
That's why they're working to create a space where women can feel comfortable learning and asking questions, while still being themselves.
The upcoming schedule includes October 11, November 15 and November 29, with classes beginning at 10:30 a.m. at Tarpein’s in Davenport.
There is no cost to attend, but registration is requested. Women interested in trying the class can sign up through the event's registration page.
