If you wanted to just get off of the grid and leave it all behind... you might be in the right place. A recent study found Minnesota to be among the best states in the country for off-grid living.

It makes sense if you think about it. We have a lot of amazing natural resources, good land for growing, lots of open space and, at least for the last few years, pretty mild winters overall.

I have to admit, growing up my dad always told us of his dreams of 'moving to a cabin up north and going off the grid,' but that sounded like a nightmare to us. No Sega?

Now that I am older I find myself dreaming of the same thing. Never having to drive down Division again is my version of heaven.

In a study using five categories: feasibility, infrastructure, affordability, climate and safety, the folks at homegnome concluded that Iowa was the best place to live off the grid.

Iowa ranked highly in affordability (2nd), safety (2nd) and infrastructure (3rd). Texas finished second overall and Kentucky was found to be the third-best state for off-grid living.

Minnesota finished in fourth place overall. The state ranked ninth in feasibility, 11th in infrastructure, 14th in affordability,39th in climate (so much for the aforementioned 'mild winters') and fourth in safety.

Rounding out the top five was Oklahoma. The bottom five (in order from 50-46) were Rhode Island, New Jersey, Connecticut, Massachusetts and Maryland.
