The Minnesota DNR is warning people to be extra careful with fireworks and campfires this weekend and in some cases, they're suggesting not lighting them at all. That's because of the abnormally dry conditions that we've been having all across Minnesota this summer.

The Minnesota Drought map is showing that right now most of Minnesota is in a moderate drought, including most of southeast Minnesota. Other parts are abnormally dry (including a little bit of southeast Minnesota along the Wisconsin border), and other areas are in severe drought, including a small portion of southern Minnesota along the Iowa border.

In a news release sent out earlier today from the Minnesota DNR, they say they expect high fire danger statewide this weekend. The DNR writes, "An unintentional spark in these dry conditions could ignite a wildfire."

If you plan to light off fireworks, be careful, watch where the sparks are going to make sure you don't start a wildfire on accident. In certain counties in central Minnesota, there are fireworks restrictions in place and burning restrictions. Those counties are "the southern portion of Beltrami county, and all of Cass, Crow Wing, Hubbard, Itasca, Morrison, Todd and Wadena counties."

So while there aren't restrictions in effect for southeast Minnesota, it's still important to be aware of your surroundings, think about where you're lighting fireworks, and make sure campfires are always monitored and in an established fire ring.

In most cases, leaving the fireworks to the experts is the best idea. When you're planning your outing to go see fireworks this Sunday, don't forget these 10 fireworks essentials!
