Minnesota Ice Cream Shop Being Boycotted Because of Its Name
A new ice cream shop is expected to open soon at the Mall of America, and more than 11,000 people have signed a petition to boycott the business. Why? Because of the shop's name - Sweet Jesus.
The shop was founded in 2015 and currently has several locations in Canada. They are being blasted for "trashing Christianity and mocking the saving work of our Lord Jesus Christ.” According to the petition put together by a group known as CitizenGo Canada, "choosing the name of our Lord for a brand of soft-serve ice cream is totally offensive and revolting."
They are asking for an apology and an immediate name change.
According to the Sweet Jesus website, their "name was created from the popular phrase that people use as an expression of enjoyment, surprise or disbelief. Our aim is not to offer commentary on anyone’s religion or belief systems, Our own organization is made up of amazing people that represent a wide range of cultural and religious beliefs."
