St. Paul, MN (KROC-AM News) - Minnesota officials are reporting a statewide spike in drug overdoses.

Earlier this week, public safety alerts were issued by officials in Minneapolis, St. Paul, and Washington County concerning an alarming increase in the number of overdoses and now the Minnesota Department of Public Safety has released statistics suggesting it’s a more widespread phenomenon. The report says almost 90 law enforcement agencies in the state report overdose data and over just the past two weeks those agencies have submitted reports on 175 overdoses. Naloxone, also known as Narcan, was administered in just over 50 of the cases and there were 17 deaths as a result of an overdose.

A list of drugs was involved in the overdoses, including heroin, synthetic marijuana, methamphetamine, oxycodone, cocaine, fentanyl, and prescription medications. The report also states the number of drugs submitted to the Bureau of Criminal Apprehension this year that contain certain opioids, such as fentanyl, has increased 78-percent when compared to the first half of last year.
