Hutchinson, MN (KROC-AM News) - It's something the Minnesota State Patrol is called on to do dozens of times each year but today an event was held in Hutchinson to celebrate the outcome of a recent "blood run" and to draw attention to the state's ongoing blood shortage.

The State Patrol got the call for help on July 21st when Jenapher Blair began to hemorrhage after giving birth at the Hutchinson hospital. The doctors caring for her lacked an adequate supply of blood to treat the life-threatening complication and discovered the nearest supply of the blood was in St. Paul.

Four state troopers participated in the lifesaving relay. Colonel Matt Langer says the first trooper transported the blood from the St. Paul blood bank to awaiting State Patrol flight crew, who then took off for the Hutchinson airport. They were met by two State Troopers who then rushed the blood to the waiting doctors at the Hutchinson hospital in a process that lasted about 65 minutes from the initial call for assistance.

So far this year, the State Patrol has performed 19 of the lifesaving relays of blood, plasma, platelets, and transplant organs. Colonel Langer says the usual average is 60 to 90 each year.
