I mean, come on, the most important holiday of the entire year is National Donut Day and many will come out of their houses for this special day. My youngest daughters favorite treat is a donut and I can understand why. They're delicious and really makes you happy! If you can eat a donut and not smile, than you are not human.

Wanna know when the first donut was ever made?

Supposedly, a lady named Elizabeth Gregory, from the mid-19th century, dabbled in deep-fried dough with the centers filled with goodies and would send the delicious treats with her son when he went out to sea. Rumor has it that her son would poke a hole through it to make them last longer. He took credit for the hole in the donut:

In an interview with the Boston Post at the turn of the century, Captain Gregory tried to quell such rumors with his recollection of the moment 50 years before: using the top of a round tin pepper box, he said, he cut into the middle of a doughnut "the first doughnut hole ever seen by mortal eyes."

Donuts became very popular during World War I. Women volunteers would feed the soldiers these donuts and hence National Donut Day was born as each year it became a great fundraising and recognition opportunity towards Veterans. Rochester joins in the festivities, there's an event at the VFW from 7-10am and then History Center of Olmsted County from 1-4pm.

Every year on the first Friday in June, the Rochester Salvation Army joins the rest of the country in celebrating National Donut Day. Started in 1938 as a fundraiser to help those in need during the Great Depression and to celebrate the “Lassies” that served donuts to soldiers in World War 1, National Donut Day has developed into a day of thanks for veterans groups everywhere. Join us from 7-10 a.m. on June 2 at the VFW Post 1215 to thank our veterans, and grab a free, Original Recipe WW1 Donut.
