Genoa, MN (KROC AM News) –Two off-duty law enforcement officers sprung into action and saved a 56-year-old man after a home northwest of Rochester caught fire Saturday morning.

Olmsted County Sheriff’s Captain Scott Behrns says it appears a lightning strike started the fire in the home at 8437 Main Street in the Village of Genoa about 11:45 AM while severe storms were moving across the region. The home was occupied by a 49-year-old woman, her 56-year-old husband, and two children.

Captain Behrns says the woman and the children were able to safely evacuate but the man required assistance. An Olmsted County deputy and a Rochester police officer live in the same neighborhood and were at their homes when the fire broke out. Behrns says both off-duty law officers went to the scene and rushed into the burning home to bring a 56-year-old man safely outside.

The Pine Island fire Department that arrived and extinguished the fire. Captain Behrns did not know the overall extent of the damage, but he indicated the house is currently inhabitable.
